Forced to use Mechs as a Dwarf? Good alternatives?

It seems like the only frontline option for a Dwarf is mech suits.
Engineers look like garbage compared to other frontline units (swordsmen, cavalry, scorpions, monks).
If we borrow frontline, we're not getting research bonuses so it will also be weak.
Am I missing something or there are only 2 options: choose mechsuits and pay high or choose engineers and lose fights?

The Dwarf dilemma - so mechs are actually arguably the best front line unit in the game in terms of pure stats. Their drawback, being that they always die, is huge however. Personally i recommend focusing on using silver mechs (these are the best for cost version) as your frontline.

Engineers are actually not that bad - they are a solid front line - if not the best. Where they are useful to Dwarf is in garrison defence. Mechs should not be used for garrison defence as when they die you cannot heal them and you lose lots of Mithril - so engineers should be your front line unit in garrison - that is if you can afford to research for a unit that is only going to be used in your garrison. Your other option is to only build deadeyes for your wall and to have a human or lich ally only build scorpions or footmen and share defene with them.

How are engineers not bad if they don't have a single tanking ability? They will be destroyed by poison/range units/large units.

If we loan scorpions or footmen, we're not getting research bonuses for them, so they will be around equal to engineers and worse than if they were used by a Lich/Human player.

I like Dwarf as a race but I am thinking how to avoid all that struggle with mech units. They are cool, but the price is too high for me.

Battlemechs are absolutely amazing units, yes as you pointed out they are expensive and very painful to loose in pvp but they are hands down the most powerful frontline unit in the game, in the early game or with low research they can be a bit problematic at times but by mid to late game they become almost unkillable unless your fighting deadeye’s or more powerful enemies. At max rank they get over 230,000hp 25,000 attack, 40% damage reduction, 60% additional missile damage reduction, 30% evade, cannot be stunned, frozen, burned, poisoned, or morale broken... they are expensive but so worth it! They lead me to a city level 32 clear of void 80 and I’ve assisted many other dwarves on my server do the same, Battlemechs are very powerful.

All that said Mechs and dwarves on the whole are a very expensive race to play. Without Gafgar and Jacques your really going to hurt in pvp. I very highly recommend running Gafgar with Temporay Repair and Repairman maxed if your going the mech route or you will be running troops without healing vs every other player in the game with Vega AoE healing there army for 20+ seconds which is a loosing battle or at least very expensive...

As for engineers, they continue to be the worst gold unit in the game, they are the only unit in the entire game that gets no additional skill or upgrade from silver to gold beyond more health and damage. Every single other playable race unit gets a new base skill from silver to gold rank. Now engineers do get a lot of health and damage for a small unit. By rank XIII they have 85,000hp and 43,000 attack with 134 upgrades ( 20% life and 35% damage boost remains to be researched so they should break 100,000hp and 60,000 attack ) but even still I would only ever put them on the wall as they morale break and are small so they get clobbered by large and giant enemies and with options like Bombardiers, Battlemechs, Deadeyes, and Excelsiors available they are dead last as a choice for any gold army troops imo.

As for borrowing, I assume you mean for the void issue where if you immediately return the units to the owner after entering the void that the void copies loose all the owners research. This can be avoided and you will continue to keep all of the owners academy upgrades as long as you don’t return the units until you finish your void clear so if you can find someone to help who doesn’t mind loaning units for 30-45 minutes while you finish the void you can run full power loaned troops and then send them back to the owner once your void heroes have no stamina left.

Cheers!

If you borrow frontline the research bonuses are those of their owner so you're ok with that. Unless you mean train other race units by switching which is generaly a bad idea.
Engineers are ok-ish.... problem with them is almost everyone uses some sort of anti-normal unit as either frontline, or charging cavalry behind spears/swords.
As for garrison... there is nothing else to do with "excess" mithril anyway, so might as well put mechs in :)

Oh I didn't know that when you borrow you also get their research bonuses. Thanks for your replies. It helps a lot.
Is there any limit to a number of troops you can borrow and a number of borrowed troops you can take into a fight or void?
Borrowed troops don't count as your gold limit, right?
Can't find a decent info about that mechanics.

You can borrow up too 2 units of troops from a single player, you can take up to 3 borrowed units of troops into the void, and In the normal map your only limited by the number of friends who are willing to share with you so you could in theory deploy a full field of borrowed troops.

Borrowed troops in the void that die do not affect the owner, so there is no issue if they get injured or destroyed in the void.

Borrowed troops in the world that die will be returned to the owner injured or destroyed. This is extremely frowned upon, killing another players troops on loan is a very fast way to get yourself blacklisted on your server by all the other players, kicked out of your house, and never shared units with again.

Borrowed troops continue to count against the owners troop cap and have no affect on your troop cap.

Cheers!
